What Kind of Year Has it Been?

First things first — I just finished producing a soundtrack album of the music I wrote for Theatre Off Jackson and REBATEnsemble’s production of Richard III this Spring. Premiered and run on TOJ’s main stage this past May, REBATEnsemble‘s Richard III finds “Shakespeare’s gory tale of a nihilistic pariah’s merciless ambition [reset] in 1930s Chinatown, Seattle. Richard seduces, tricks, and eventually murders his way to dominance as Prohibition, corruption, and culture clashes wreak pandemonium” (The Stranger). It was a thrilling challenge to write music that supported such rich characters and story, and to help establish the jazz-inflected, film-noir sound of this world. I’m excited to finally be able to share some of the music from the show, so please check it out below!

Along with my work on Richard III, I’ve been quite busy over the past year working with 5th Avenue Theatre. Last Fall, I worked as an orchestrator and guitarist in the theatre’s 10 Minute Musical educational project. This year I assisted the music teams of two new musicals produced by 5th Ave: Glenn Slater and Wendy Wilf’s Beatsville, premiered at Sarasota’s Asolo Repertory Theatre in May, and Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion: The Musical, premiered at 5th Avenue Theatre in June. Next up, I’ll be working as copyist on 5th Avenue Theatre‘s 2017/18 season production of Ragtime.

This year has been busier than any so far and that’s not about to change. So stay tuned. There will be more.
